Using Screen Power Integrated With WordPerfect 5.1

Many of our speech and braille users report that they use
WordPerfect more than any other application program. We
recognize that this puts WordPerfect in a special category and
have therefore provided a special WordPerfect environment file
with Screen Power. You don't need to know anything about
environments to use them, though.

This environment file has comprehensive settings, including many
special Screen Power capabilities, such as hotkeys, windows,
monitors, and macros created specifically for WordPerfect. All
you need to do to use the environment is to load the environment
file. There are two easy ways to do this, either from the DOS
command line or using Screen Power's menu system.

Note: The environment requires WordPerfect's default screen
          colors and settings.

Loading the WordPerfect Environment from DOS

The WordPerfect environment filename is WP.SPI. To load this
file from the DOS command line, use our special utility program
called SPILOAD. It enables you to load your environments
without going into the menu system:

1. Go to the Screen Power directory (usually \SPI).

2. Type the following (without quotes): "SPILOAD WP" (you do
not need to specify the file extension)

You can load the file from the root (or another) directory by
including the proper path. For example, if the WordPerfect
environment file is in the \SPI directory, you should type:
"SPILOAD \SPI\WP"

Loading the WordPerfect Environment from the Menu

You can also load your environment from the Screen Power menu
system:

1. Activate the menu system by pressing CTRL-V.

2. From the Main Menu, press G to go into Global Options.

3. Select F for File Options.

4. Select E for Environment Options.

5. Select L to Load an environment. Screen Power says "Enter
     filename."

6. You can either type the name of the environment here or use
the DOWN ARROW key to move through the available
environments. If you want to type the name here, simply
type the letters: WP. You do not need to specify the
extension, because all Screen Power environments have the
extension SPI. If you use the DOWN ARROW, Screen Power will
speak the name of the environment. When you get to WP.SPI,
     press the ENTER key.

Note: The DOWN ARROW key will only display files that
are in the current directory. If your environment
file is in a different directory, you must enter
               the filename and path directly.

7. Once the environment is loaded, you can press CTRL-Q to exit
     the menu system.

How the Environment Works

The WordPerfect environment includes many hotkeys (customized
commands). Some of the hotkeys activate windows or monitors.
Some activate macros that, in turn, activate other macros. We
will not describe the contents or format of these hotkeys,
windows, monitors, and macros here. This document describes
what the WordPerfect functions will do when the WordPerfect
environment is loaded.

Status Line Prompts and Menus

Whenever a prompt or menu appears on line 25, Screen Power says
the whole line and moves the braille to the beginning of the
line. In the few cases where the menu or prompt uses two lines,
Screen Power will say line 24 and 25. Usually in these cases
the braille display moves to highlighted information located
elsewhere on the screen.

Spell Checking (CTRL-F2)

When you press CTRL-F2 to activate WordPerfect's spell checker,
you need to be able to read the misspelled word highlighted at
the top of the page and the alternate spelling choices at the
bottom of the page. Here's what happens:

When you press CTRL-F2, Screen Power first reads line 25 to
you and puts the braille display at the beginning of the
line. Here you select word, page, document, etc.

When you make that selection, Screen Power first reads and
spells the highlighted misspelled word in the top half of
the screen. At the same time, the braille display shows the
first word of the corrections offered in the bottom half of
the screen. Use your Screen Power braille navigation
commands to read all the corrections.

When you select a lettered correction, WordPerfect advances
to the next misspelled word, and Screen Power reads and
spells it and moves the display back to the first word of
     the new correction list.

When you are done and ready to exit, Screen Power reads line
25 to you and puts the braille display at the beginning of
the line. This line contains the prompts when you exit
     spell checking.

To move the braille display to the top of column 1 in the
correction list, press CTRL-ALT-W. To move to the top of
column 2, press CTRL-ALT-E. To move to the top of column 3,
     press CTRL-ALT-R.

You may have some questions:

Q: How do I read the status line after I hear the corrections?

A: Press ALT-9. We have set a special window, Window 9, to
read the status line. We set a hotkey, ALT-9, to read
Window 9 from anywhere in WordPerfect. You can also press
ALT-SPACE to read the status line.

Q: How do I re-read the misspelled word?

A: Press ALT-1. This reads Window 1, which reads only red
background text in lines 1 through 11.

Q: How do I re-read and spell the misspelled word?

A: Press ALT-SHIFT-1. This reads and spells the contents on
     Window 1.

Q: How do I show the misspelled word with braille?

A: Chose menu item 4 to edit the word. You can also press
either the RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW keys to activate this
menu choice. The braille display moves to the misspelled
word. At this point you can make the corrections yourself
or press F7 to return to the correction list.

Q: How do I read the correction list with speech?

A: Press ALT-2. Window 2 is all text in lines 15 through 22.
And you can press ALT-SHIFT-2 to read and spell Window 2.

List Files (F5)

When you press F5, ENTER to read your file list, Screen Power will
say lines 24 and 25 which contains the menu items for the List
Files screen. The braille display will show the highlighted
filename and its information. As you use the cursor keys to move
through the list, Screen Power shows on the display and reads
each newly selected file information. To hear the highlighted
file again, press ALT-5 to read window 5. To hear the menu items
again, press ALT-SPACE.

Reveal Codes (ALT-F3)

When you activate Reveal Codes, WordPerfect divides the screen in
half vertically. The top half remains the regular screen. The
bottom half uses a red background/white foreground soft cursor to
move from character to character. As you use cursor keys, the
system cursor on top and the red background cursor on the bottom
move together.

Screen Power puts the braille display on the red highlight in the
bottom half of the screen (lines 14 through 24). The first
character shown on the display is the highlighted character. If
a code is highlighted, the braille display shows brackets on
either side of the code. As you move through the text with your
cursor commands, Screen Power will speak the character, word, or
line the cursor is on in the upper half of the screen. Press
ALT-3 to hear Screen Power speak the highlighted Reveal Code.

Thesaurus (ALT-F1)

WordPerfect's thesaurus presents a different challenge, because
words are presented in three columns. The first column has a
bold letter next to each word, to indicate that you can select
the word by typing its letter. If you want to select a word from
column 2, you press the RIGHT ARROW key to move to column 2.

When you press ALT-F1, Screen Power does the following things:

1. It says "thesaurus," then reads the highlighted (red
background) word at the top of the screen.
2. It places the braille display at the top of column 1.
3. It reads the status line, line 25.

Screen Power has place markers at the top of each column. Move
the braille display to the top of column 1 by pressing
ALT-CTRL-W. Move to the top of column 2 by pressing ALT-CTRL-E.
Move to the top of column 3 by pressing ALT-CTRL-R.

To re-read the highlighted word, press ALT-1.

Help (F3)

When you press the Help key (F3), Screen Power goes into
WordPerfect's help system. In any help screen, Screen Power
places the display at the beginning of line 1, then reads the top
line, then the bottom line (which contains instructions). If you
press a function key, WordPerfect displays a screen with an
explanation of the function. To read the screen with speech,
press ALT-0.

If you press a letter for information about a feature or command,
WordPerfect displays an alphabetical list of features and
commands. Screen Power automatically puts the braille display at
the beginning of line 1, then reads the top identifying line and
the instruction line. To read the list with speech, press ALT-0.

Exit (F7)

We have labelled a number of keys so that they will speak their
function along with performing it. One of the keys is F7, the
Exit key. When you press F7, Screen Power says "Exit," then reads
the status line. The braille display moves to the beginning of
the status line.

Cancel (F1)

We have also labelled the Cancel key. It will say "Cancel," when
you press it, then read the status line. The braille display
moves to the beginning of the status line.

F1 is also used to undelete text. When you press F1 to undelete,
Screen Power reads the Undelete Menu and places the braille
display at the beginning of line 25. To hear the text that will
be undeleted, press ALT-1.

Switch (SHIFT-F3)

This is the command to switch from Document 1 to Document 2.
Screen Power will say "Switch." The braille display moves to the
cursor.

Indent (F4)

Screen Power will say "Indent," then speak WordPerfect's cursor
position (by reading the last ten characters in line 25.)

Double Indent (SHIFT-F4)

This is the command that indents equally from both the right and
left margins. Screen Power will say "Double Indent," then speak
WordPerfect's cursor column position.

Center (SHIFT-F6)

Screen Power says "Center," then speaks the cursor position.

Flush Right (ALT-F6)

Screen Power says "Flush Right" and speaks the cursor position.

TAB key

Screen Power says "Tab," then speaks WordPerfect's cursor
position.

SHIFT-TAB

WordPerfect's SHIFT-TAB command has two different functions,
depending on whether you are in Insert or Typeover mode. In
Typeover mode, SHIFT-TAB performs a Back Tab function. In Insert
mode, SHIFT-TAB is called Margin Release because while it
performs a back tab, it releases the left margin if you are on
the left. When you press SHIFT-TAB, Screen Power says "Back Tab"
regardless of whether you are in Insert or Typeover mode, then it
tells you the cursor position.

Bold (F6) and Underline (F8)

Screen Power tells you the attribute or attributes currently being
activated. It will identify the following attributes:

     Normal Text
     Bold
     Underline
     Bold and Underline

It does this by checking the attributes of the end of the status
line. Depending on the screen colors and attributes it sees
there, it identifies one of the above attributes. For example,
try the following: Press F6. Screen Power will say "Bold On."
Then type "This is bold." Now press F6 again. Screen Power will
say "Bold Off."

To read all bold text on the editing screen, press ALT-6 to read
window 6. To read all underlined text on the editing screen,
press ALT-8 to read window 8.

To find the attribute assigned to the current character, press
ALT-CTRL-A. Screen Power announces bold text, underline text,
bold and underline text, and normal text. If the text is marked
with any other attribute, Screen Power says "text has unknown
attribute."

End Field (F9)

This is the WordPerfect command to end keyboard input during a
merge. Screen Power will say "End Field." The WordPerfect 5.1
status line will read "Field: 2" when the cursor is below the
{END FIELD} marker. It will read "Field: 1" when the cursor is
above the marker. (Note: If you delete all End Field markers,
WordPerfect's status line still tells you that you are in Field
1, until you go to the top of the document with the WordPerfect
HOME, HOME, UP ARROW command. This is normal WordPerfect
operation.)

Cursor Movement Keys

The following cursor movement keys are active. They are all
WordPerfect commands, but they are also Screen Power hotkeys.

functions for these keys, plus do other (Screen Power) things
that will provide optimum speech output. The braille display
follows the cursor.
